An amazing 2000+ mile adventure in a U-Haul, towing a car transport, began in my homeland of da U.P. (Upper Peninsula of Michigan) in April of 2008. I blazed through the torrential rain of Wisconsin, freak 3-day blizzards of Minnesota, pheasant-infested trails of South Dakota and North Dakota, big sky Montana, tightly-woven mazes through the Rockies of Idaho, and the variable terrain of Washington. I took it all on so I could make it to the gorgeous state of Oregon and wonderful city of Portland! And I'm so glad I did; it was worth it! Although I terribly miss my family, KUPL has become part of my adopted family.
I LOVE working in the wacky world of broadcasting! It can be absolutely insane AND enjoyable at the same time. When I'm not rocking the jukebox at KUPL, I can be found partaking in any of my favorite hobbies: watching movies, cycling, hosting tea parties, spelunking, taking angry naps. Okay, two of those are false. Which? I'm such a stinker! You betcha, eh!?!
Boss Haas
I've been working in radio for 30 years. Spent most of my career in the Honolulu market employed at KSSK, KRTR, KQMQ, KDEO, KIKI, KKUA to name a few, playing everything from Top 40, AC, Oldies, Classic Rock, Urban to Country. Also spent a few years in southern California at XHRM and KMDY/KNJO.
Three things listeners don't know about me:
1. Years before the radio bug bit me, I did lots of acting in stage plays as a kid. Talent scout asked that I audition for Hawaii Five-O.
2. Never gone skiing in my life, but have fallen off the surf board many times while growing up in Hawaii.
3. When I find myself away from the microphone, I enjoy
spending time on the Oregon coast, going to the movies, concerts and hanging out with my nieces and nephew
What a wild roller coaster ride this 28-year career has been! Started working in radio in the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA, my hometown), and soon ended up in large markets like Denver, Indianapolis…and now here in Portland at KUPL. More importantly, I’m the husband of a wonderful woman and the father of three terrific kids.
A few things you might not know about me:
1) I’m 95% deaf in my right ear, so I say “What?” and Huh?” a lot. Too many years of having the headphones cranked up! On the plus side, since it’s my right ear, I can’t hear my wife and kids chatting away when I’m driving.
2) Cats love me and I don’t know why. Since moving to Portland in 2004, no fewer than 7 cats have found their way to my doorstep. We adopted the last one who wandered into our lives.
3) Before Radio became my career of choice, other occupations I was interested in were Marine Biology, Music Education, Veterinary Medicine and the Ministry.
4) I have 3 cookbooks written, and am waiting for a publisher to discover me. The books are more than just collections of recipes. They are slices of everyday life, with bits of humor and wisdom mixed in for good measure.
