Alan Jackson Shaved!
Well, to be honest, I’m sure it looks fine, but it’s just shocking. In a few weeks, I’ll be used to it, and it’ll be all gravy, but at first, I get FREAKED OUT when somebody changes their facial hair without me expecting it.
I wonder if Alan Jackson had to run that by his wife? I guarantee if my wife even heard clippers buzzing from the bathroom, she’d kick the door in to make sure that I wasn’t shaving off my beard. I like having a beard, but my wife freaking loves it. I’m currently in the midst of looking for another TV job, and I think my wife would veto it if they suggested that I shave my beard.
So if your man was to shave without telling you, would you throw a fit?

Trying To Get Some Style
Since I’ve lost much of my weight, I’ve decided that I’m going to try and be stylish for once in my life before I’m too old to do it. I still want to lose about 15 more pounds, so I’m not TOTALLY re-wardrobing yet, but I figure my feet should still be the same size, so I bought some new shoes last night.
They’re Doc Martens. Now, I kind of bought them without doing much research, so I’m not sure if I accidentally ventured into a niche that I’m not supposed to be in. Does that explain my concern enough? Y’know, some brands are associated with certain people, and I don’t know if Doc Martens are part of th… Here’s the thing. I don’t want to be a jack***.
Oh boy, I should have Bing’d these things before I jumped in…
First Christmas Pageant!
It’s almost impossible to believe, but my son, Declan, who was born about 6 days ago in my mind, is participating in his first Christmas Pageant this evening! Granted, he is only 17 months old, but as I’m told, he has a very important part during the pageant, which is to play the Jingle Bells! He and his two friends at his daycare (who are the same age) will ring the bells while the older kids sing the song.
Growing up, you wonder when you become that guy – the Dad who is crouched down in the front of the auditorium with a HandyCam, not actually getting to enjoy the concert, because he’s too worried about “capturing the moment” on video. Well, I guess that day is today for me… and I CANNOT TELL YOU how excited I am to be at this point!
I love that little turd factory…
Cavalia Is Here!
Cavalia is here! I went and saw a special sneak preview of the show this week, and I can’t tell you about it, because I don’t have the words for it. It’s like nothing you’ve seen before, and like nothing you’re expecting. Ticket information is here, and trust me, it’s worth every penny…

I Hate Halloween.
There. I said it. I’m OUT OF THE CLOSET as a Halloween Grinch. I’m not proud of it, but every year, this stupid holiday disgusts me more. But let me be clear about what makes me unhappy here:
- I ENJOY dressing up. It’s fun to be “not me” for a night.
- I ENJOY getting together with friends and having a good time.
- I ENJOY candy. I don’t even care that it’s made by big corporations.
- I ENJOY carving pumpkins. I can create art, and eat the leftovers? Bonus!
- I ENJOY seeing little kids in costumes. I’ll toss them a Snickers every day of the year.
HOWEVER, I HATE PUNK KIDS! If you are trick-or-treating in my neighborhood, you probably live there, which means things could be worse for you. I don’t care if you wear a trash bag, stuff it with leaves, and go as a bag of leaves. But you have to at least wear something. And even worse, I’m a decent guy deep down, so I can’t turn you down when you ask for candy, even if you don’t have a costume. Which means that some little kid is denied candy at the end of the night because I was too chicken.
Perhaps what I dislike most about Halloween is that I can’t opt-out. The dang hooligans come right to your door. Even if I turn the lights off and close the curtains and stay in my room, they still knock at 9:45 at night, and then they smash my pumpkins. Don’t believe me? Then you won’t mind coming over and cleaning up what’s NOT on my porch…
I need to figure out a way to not be at home on Halloween night. I’m grumpy this morning (obviously)… =)
You Know You’re Too Old To Trick Or Treat When…
10) You’re old enough to drive yourself to the good neighborhoods.
9) If you don’t eat black licorice because you had a bad experience with Jagermeister.
8) You dress up as Eddie Munster because that was your favorite show.
7) People think you have a werewolf costume when you just have a tank top.
6) You’re surprised to see that there are blue M&M’s now.
5) You can’t do a Transylvanian accent because your voice is cracking.
4) You avoid the chocolate candy ‘cause it kicks up your heartburn.
3) You only trick or treat nearby because you remember when gas was a $1.99.
2) By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders.
1) You keep having to go home to pee.

Our Own Bobbleheads!
Awwwww, isn’t that cute! You’ve seen the caricatures that our Listener Blogger, Nola, created for us, and now, she’s turned them into BobbleHeads!
Now, I know it’s totally vain, but I would LOVE to have my own BobbleHead someday. Seriously, I only have a few established career goals, but that would be one of them.
I have a food item named after me, so I can check that one off. I still haven’t been on a billboard or on a bus (like Lars Larson), so I still need to do that one, but a BobbleHead would be very cool!
Thanks, Nola for at least making a facsimile of it!
Portland To Coast!
It’s really starting to dawn on me that Portland To Coast is coming up this Friday! Perhaps I should think about taking a walk and doing some training, eh? … Nah…
Had the chance to meet Bob Foote, who was one of the founders of this race 30 years ago. He was in the very first one, and he’ll be at this one this weekend too. Very cool.
Team KUPL is setting out at 5:15 from the start line on Friday, and we’ve got something kinda cool involved with it. If you find us out on the course, ask ANY ONE OF US how you can get in for Zac Brown Band tickets. We have a pair to give away, and ONLY people who find us and ask will have the opportunity to get in. Just ask! It’s as easy as that! =)
Time to hit the gym! … Or not…
Staying Grounded
Yeah, I admit it. I take things for granted. And when I take a step back and look at something like this, I think “How dare I take that for granted?”
This past weekend, Toby Keith was in the Pacific Northwest. I have never had the opportunity to meet him, but I have talked to him on the phone before, and I’m a big fan of his music. However, I’m not as big a fan as my cousin is, which leads me to the story.
She and her boyfriend were at the Toby show at the Gorge on Saturday, and were able to score some backstage passes to go back and meet him. Judging from her Facebook posts, this was a HUGE moment for her! And that’s why I feel bad. Because I have landed a cool job, I find myself with limited access to some of these stars, and I just brush it off like it’s no big deal. Granted, country stars are SUPREMELY down-to-earth, and if you ask them, meeting them is no big deal, but we (the public) know better. It’s HUGE for a lot of folks.
So, at any rate, I’m going to try to keep in mind that some aren’t as fortunate as me, and I won’t take these moments for granted anymore. Zac Brown, here comes your new stalker! =)
Why I Love Toby Keith
I’ll be the first to admit it. I was kind of ambivalent toward Toby Keith at the beginning of my career. I liked Shoulda Been A Cowboy, Wish I Didn’t Know, and lots of his early stuff. I really liked I Wanna Talk About Me, but I still remained kind of a passive Toby Keith fan.
And then… Toby came out with Cryin’ For Me. From then on, I have been chanting “Toby, Toby, Toby!” I think Cryin’ For Me is the best thing he’s ever done, and was clearly the best song of that entire year.
I’ve said it before that I’m kinda hit or miss with George Strait. I’m the same with way Alan Jackson. I feel that way about a l0t of artists, but since Cryin’, Toby has been non-stop with me.
And another reason is because of all the stuff he’s doing right now to give back to the community. This Share Food for Toby thing that we did yesterday was awesome, and the Autism Speaks auction next week is amazing, and this all came from Toby’s camp. They’re donating his time, as well as tons of tickets to the cause! For more, click here.
The Nicest Guy In Country Music
I’ve told this story MANY times before to anybody asks me who the “Nicest” guy in country music is, but since he’s coming to town, I’ll tell it again.
Many years ago, in my first year at KUPL, I was at the Tillamook Co. Fair with the KUPL Street Team. I was just starting my career here in Portland, and I hadn’t moved up the totem pole AT ALL! But, I found myself backstage at the show somehow in a circle of people that included my program director, Dierks Bentley, as well as his management team and band. At some point during the conversation, Dierks (who was on the other side of the circle) realized that he hadn’t met me yet, and crossed the circle to shake my hand and introduce himself. He asked me about being on the Street Team, and when I said it was basically my first time backstage, he took me on the bus and introduced me to the rest of the guys, who were in there playing video games and lounging.
Admittedly, Dierks wasn’t as big then as he is now, but nothing has changed with him. If ANYBODY asks, I tell them Dierks is the nicest country star I’ve ever met, because he cared about the little guy. I was honored, and still remember that moment fondly.
He’s coming to Clark Co. tonight! We’ll see you there!
Brian Miskimins Well Wishes!
If you recognize that face, it’s likely that you’ve seen him on KOIN Local 6 doing weather as a fill-in during the week or on weekends. That is Brian Miskimins with his beautiful fiance, Laura, who will be getting married tomorrow, August 6th!
I’ve known Brian for a while now, and I can’t tell you how much I think of him. He’s good at his job, incredibly friendly, and a KUPL listener to boot! There’s nothing wrong with this guy. I mean, Matt is our guy in the mornings with Simon In The Morning, but I get a little excited on days when Brian gets to fill in for him.
I just wanted to take a couple minutes on my blog and say congratulations to Brian (& Laura) on their upcoming nuptials. I know you’ll be great together, and I hope you get everything you wanted, Buddy. =)
The Upcoming Spider-Man movie
First off, let’s be clear about one thing. I’m NOT one of those guys who gets all bent out of shape when they try to “reboot” a movie series. Who knows? Perhaps they missed something the first time around…
But I’m not sure about this Spiderman reboot. It’s for a couple reasons. First off, wasn’t the first set of movies absolutely incredible at the box office? And by all accounts, at least the first movie was an unbelievable must-see, wasn’t it? And wasn’t this all less than a decade ago? I just feel like there should be significant advancements in cinema before you try to redo a movie, and I’m not sure we have that yet.
Also, I don’t really know who this Andrew Garfield guy is. Wasn’t he president at one point? =) I don’t know what was wrong with Tobey Maguire, and I’m not sure why everybody thinks this new guy is going to blow him away…
Again, let me stress that I have no problem with doing movies again. I thought the first Superman with Christopher Reeve was amazing, and I LOVED the version with Brandon Routh too. In fact, I’m looking forward to the re-reboot that is rumored to be happening in the next couple years. And yes, I’m excited about Captain America as well…
My Heart Goes Out To Daniel Baldwin
I tell you what, I’m FAR more broken up about the whole Daniel Baldwin situation than I have ever been with a celebrity split before. I’m sure it stems from the fact that I’ve met Daniel on a few occasions, but still, I can’t quite figure it out.
But I do have a guess. On the few times where I’ve found myself in the same place as Daniel, he has always had his kids with him. His daughters, Avis & Finley, are absolute sweethearts, and that kind of sweetness can’t come from awful parents. My son has also been with me when I’ve been with him, and his girls are always fascinated with giving my son treats that he shouldn’t have. =) I remember when some Goldfish crackers came out for him, and we had to swoop in before my boy grabbed it and put it in his mouth. And then, Avis, the oldest, ran out of goldfish, but still reached into her pocket and gave my son some “pixie dust,” as she called it.
And that’s why this touches me more than most. You see tons of splits where you KNOW there are kids, but you still feel kind of disconnected from the whole thing, because you don’t know those kids. And this is particularly sad when you hear how the kids are allegedly scared of their Mom. It’s just tragic.
At any rate, I know Daniel to be a decent guy, and I certainly hope he comes out the other end of this thing OK…
Street of Dreams
Have you ever been to the Street of Dreams? I got the chance to go out there today and poke around, and I tell you, I LOVE going to that event. They should call the Street of Make-You-Feel-Poor though. I walk around those houses, and I fantasize about them, but still, I’m going to have to make some major changes in my life before I would ever be able make that kind of money!
Nonetheless, I still love going. There was one from a couple years ago called the Pietra del Mar, and it’s still the house I dream about having one day. Sure, it cost 2.4 million, but hey! Who know, maybe I have a rich uncle who has been watching my life from afar and intends to leave all his money to me so that I might have an indoor pool someday! =)
Declan’s 1st Birthday!
It’s hard to believe, but my baby boy Declan is turning 1 year old tomorrow! Jolynn and I were talking about this, and it’s an odd feeling. On one hand, it feels like just yesterday that we were trying to have a baby, and Shannon was pregnant, and we had this new little baby, but at the same time, it’s amazing to me that it’s only been a year since my life was completely changed.
So, to update you, he’s walking now, and can pretty well toddle for as long as he wants without falling down. Sometimes, he walks like he’s been hitting the bottle for a 12-hour bender, and sometimes, he walks like he’s completely invincible. But he is as CUTE as can be!
At any rate, I absolutely love being a Dad, and I look forward to many years to come filled with the joy that this one has been. =)
Craig Morgan – What An Amazing Night!
The RoZone Concert Series has concluded, finishing off with an amazing night of country music! First off, a HUGE KUPL thanks to Chad Williams and the band for opening up the night, as well as local police officer and country music singer Kurt Van Meter! Both were unbelievable!
We also want to extend a special thanks to the Marine Corps Combat Center Show Band for showing up to play a couple songs before the main act took the stage. In their Class A uniforms and marine haircuts, these guys (& gal) ROCKED it down! What fun that was!
And then, as the tension built, the man everybody came to see hit the stage, and nary did another butt hit the chairs! Craig Morgan was amazing on stage, and had everybody singing and dancing ’til the cows came home. I was standing towards the back enjoying the show (and the KUPL Cornholing), and I overheard somebody say, “Geez, Craig Morgan has a lot of hits.” Yes sir, he does. The pictures are up on KUPL Facebook, so tag yourself if you were there!

RoZone Review!
First off, I’d like to give some big ups to the Rose Festival for putting together this BEAUTIFUL stage for the RoZone Concert Series! We’ve gone in with KINK to put this thing on, and I must say, the debut KUPL event was a party like none other!
First off, I’m a fan of Walker Hayes. I got to meet him at a car lot here in town when he came through on his first radio tour. He’s clearly a pro, and doesn’t mind getting in front of fans, no matter where they are!
Also, half the reason I went down to the show was to see Christian Kane perform. He’s starring in one of my favorite shows on TV, and I love it that he’s willing to open up for another act to get his name out there as a burgeoning country star.
And, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with Justin Moore! I had heard that he was one of the finest live performers in country music, and I was certainly not disappointed! I think he very nearly disappointed some Ford owners with his 10-minute rendition of Like A Rock, but nonetheless, it was fun to watch!
Christian Kane – 05-27-2011
Christian Kane, an actor on Leverage on TNT is going to be in the RoZone this weekend with Justin Moore!

Simon In The Morning had a fantastic special guest this morning; a young entrepreneur by the name of Ben Kaplan.

Terrible Easter Candies
Everybody has got a list of their favorite Easter candy. It’s not even hard to find lists on the internet about the Top 5 or whatever.
However, if you really want to put together a TERRIBLE Easter basket, what candy do you go with?

Country Music
I had a thought this weekend. I want to create a bumper sticker that says “Lord, thank you for COUNTRY MUSIC!”
I was listening to my iPod this weekend, and just had it on shuffle of all the new stuff that I like, and I tell you what… I think country music is AMAZING. People find out what I do for a living, and they ask me if I really like the music that I get to play. Y’know, it’s true that you don’t have to love the type of music you play to be on the radio, but I DO! Especially these days. Everything Zac Brown does becomes my new favorite song, and same thing with Brad Paisley.
I’m VERY proud to be involved with country music in my career…
Colder Weather
Zac Brown Band’s new song is called Colder Weather. Some of the meanings of the lyrics are pretty apparent, and some are not.
Nevertheless, Jolynn Winter will be danged if the lady isn’t dead at the end of the song.

Chris Young – 04-06-2011
Never since we saw Janet Jackson’s nipple on live TV has a wardrobe issue caused such an uproar!
Chris Young, who we’ve known to be a hat-wearer, has recently started appearing without one!

News Blues – No Studs On Tires
Today was another case of Jolynn seeming down out and about something.
Apparently, she was upset about not being able to make it up to Mt. Hood because the state won’t let you have studded tires anymore. No, she wasn’t mad; no, she wasn’t sad…
